Doing physical activity to calm the urge to smoke?

The researchers, whose findings were published in the journal Addiction, combined data from 19 previous clinical trials and found that a physical workout in general helped reduce the craving for nicotine, although it was unclear whether this resulted in a higher probability of quit.
"Certainly, the exercise seems to have temporary benefits and as such can be strongly recommended," said Adrian Taylor, professor of exercise and psychological health at the University of Exeter in Britain, who led the study. In clinical cases used for the study, smokers were randomly assigned to exercise like brisk walking or cycling, or some kind of activity "passive", like watching a video or just sitting quiet. Overall, Taylor's team found that people said they had less desire to smoke after exercise than before.



The reason is not entirely clear. The exercise could serve as a distraction, while physical activity may also improve mood of the people, so they would not have the need to feel better smoking, Taylor said. None of the smokers in the study were in a smoking cessation program or used nicotine replacement products such as gum or patches. Exercise may have a minor effect in smokers who use such products.
